Find a provider for this work
Start locally
EPA explains that local permitting authorities commonly maintain septic design and permit records. Depending on the jurisdiction, responsibility may sit with a health department, environmental agency, building department, district, tribe, or another authority. State rules may set minimums while local programs manage permits and inspections.
Ask for the complete property file
Request the approved design or as-built drawing, installation and repair permits, final approvals, variances, inspection records, maintenance reports held by the program, and any operating permit. Confirm whether records are current and whether later work appears in the file.
Match the provider role to the work
Some jurisdictions separately regulate pumping, hauling, installation, inspection, design, soil evaluation, maintenance, or advanced-treatment service. Ask the authority which role applies and how to check a current record. Absence from one registry does not by itself mean a company lacks every required qualification.
